Naqio — Privacy Policy

Naqio is a halal food scanner. It is built to need as little of your data as possible. This policy explains, in plain terms, what the app does and does not do.

The short version

What information Naqio handles

On your device only (never sent to us):

Sent off your device:

Consent and control

The first time a label photo would be sent for cloud reading, Naqio shows a consent notice. You can decline — Naqio then reads labels on your device only — and you can turn cloud reading on or off at any time in Settings. The halal verdict is always computed on your device from the recognized text.

Service providers

For the label‑text steps above, we use AI language‑model services run by DeepInfra, Inc. (US — serving open‑weight DeepSeek models from DeepInfra's own infrastructure), Anthropic, PBC (US — Claude models), and OpenAI, LLC (US). Each acts solely as our data processor: they receive only the ingredient text (or its numbered lines) with no identity attached, process it only to return their answer, and do not use it to train their models under the API terms we use. They may keep limited operational logs under their own terms. The list of these providers is fixed in Naqio's code — a provider change requires an app/policy update, never a silent switch.

Cloud text recognition is performed by Google Cloud Vision, a text-recognition (OCR) service, accessed only through our own Cloudflare Worker. We send just the downscaled, metadata‑stripped image plus a shared app token — never your identity. Google acts solely as our data processor: it processes the image only to return the recognized text, and does not use your photo for its own purposes. Google may keep limited operational logs under its own terms. Google processes this data under the Google Cloud terms and Data Processing Addendum, which provide protections for your data that are the same as or stronger than those described in this policy. We do not retain your photo or the extracted text. To prevent abuse, our Worker briefly keeps only an anonymized, salted request counter (never your raw IP, image, or text).

Religious preferences

Your strictness level and school (madhhab) are a sensitive category of information. Naqio stores them only on your device to compute your verdicts and never transmits them.

Children

Naqio is a general‑audience informational app. It does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.

Data retention and deletion

Your settings, history, and cache live on your device — deleting the app removes them. Label photos sent for recognition are processed transiently and are not retained by us, and neither is the full label text. The one thing we do keep is the ingredient-term cache described above: a single ingredient name and what it turned out to be, held for at most 90 days and tied to nothing about you. We hold no account or profile to delete on our side.

Informational use

Naqio is an informational aid, not a religious ruling authority. Always verify with a trusted authority where it matters to you.

Changes to this policy

We will update this policy if our data practices change, and we will revise the effective date above.
