Colophon — Privacy Policy

Colophon is a private study Bible. This policy explains, plainly, what the app does with your information. The short version: your study never leaves your device, and we have no servers for it to go to. The free tier shows optional ads, served by Google — that part is described below in full.

We collect nothing about your study

Colophon has no servers, no accounts, and no sign-in. We do not collect, transmit, store, sell, or share any personal information. We run no analytics and no crash reporting of our own. The app makes no network requests to us — there is no “us” on the other end of a connection. Your Bible reading, your searches, your notes and your highlights are never sent anywhere.

The one exception is the ad SDK described in the next section, which talks to Google — never to us, and never about your study.

Ads (free tier only)

Colophon’s study features — every translation, the Greek and Hebrew behind each word, the lexicon, search, and unlimited notes — are free and carry no ads.

The seven things Colophon Pro adds (Backup & Restore, the Study Desk, Notebooks, Study Sheets, Import, every background beyond the plain page, and the in-app text size) can be opened in two ways: by buying Colophon Pro once, or by choosing to watch a short rewarded video, which opens one of them for four hours. Ads are never shown while you read, and never without you asking for one.

Those videos are served by Google AdMob. Its SDK may process your device’s advertising identifier, coarse device and app information, general (non-precise) location derived from your IP address, your interactions with the ads themselves, and crash, performance and other diagnostic data from the ad component — in order to deliver and measure ads, to cap how often you see the same one, for analytics, and to prevent fraud. This is what Google publishes for the SDK version Colophon links, and our store privacy labels are filled in from that same list. Google acts as an independent data controller for this. Its practices are described at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and business.safety.google/privacy.

We receive no personal data from Google — only anonymous, aggregate earnings totals in the AdMob console.

Your choices.

• Buy Colophon Pro. The ad layer then stops for good — no consent form, no tracking prompt, no advertising identifier, no ad requests. It stops from the moment you buy.
• In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland (and in US states with equivalent laws), the app asks for your ad-consent choice on first use through Google’s consent platform. You can change or withdraw it at any time in Settings → Ad privacy options.
• On iOS, the system asks separately whether Colophon may track you across apps and websites. Declining is fully supported — you simply get non-personalised ads, which unlock exactly the same features.
• On Android, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in the system settings; on iOS, tracking can be turned off in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.

Declining every one of the above still leaves the whole app usable: study stays free, your device’s own text-size setting always applies, and when you have asked for an ad and it cannot be delivered, the feature opens anyway. Where ads cannot be served at all — because you declined consent, for example — the workspace tools are offered for purchase instead.

Your study stays on your device

Everything you create in Colophon — your notes, highlights, bookmarks, and notebooks — is stored only in a private database on your device. We never see it. It is not uploaded anywhere.

Backups are files you control

The Pro “Backup & Restore” feature writes a single file containing your study and hands it to your device’s share sheet (Files, a drive, AirDrop, email to yourself, or wherever you choose). Colophon keeps no copy of that file, no history, and no destination, and it never transmits it. The backup file is unencrypted, so anyone who holds it can read it — keep it as you would a paper notebook. What happens to the file after you save or send it is governed by whatever service you chose (for example, iCloud Drive or Google Drive), under their privacy policies, not ours.

Purchases

Colophon offers a one-time Pro unlock and optional tips through the App Store and Google Play. Those purchases are handled entirely by Apple and Google. We do not receive or store your payment details. Apple’s and Google’s privacy policies govern that transaction.

Bible text and study data

The Scripture texts and study data bundled with the app (translations, the original-language lexicon, cross-references) are public-domain or openly-licensed resources included in the app itself. Using them involves no data collection.

Children

Colophon is not directed at children, and we ourselves collect no data from anyone, including children. We set no ad targeting of our own; the only data involved is what Google’s SDK processes, described above.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date.
